Date: October 26, 2007

NEWS!   I've been officially invited to both Arisia in Boston and Balticon in (where else?) Baltimore. I attended Arisia in '07 and look forward to my second trip there. For Balticon, this will be my third trip in four years. I hope to see some of you at either of these cons. (Or both!)

Also, while it continues to go slow with Redeeming The Plumb, I'm also working on a "fictional" work from the Shards Universe. Many of you are familiar with the adventures of Martian Territorial Ranger Roids Cavanaugh. Well, he's going to be appearing in his first novel; which is also the first novel written by famous Martian author, H.K. Devonshire. Entitled The Bombala Mines Fast Draw, it will be his "origin" story.

INSIDE THE STORY:  Although this is the first Roids Cavanaugh novel, it's not the first time the novel has appeared. Not only is it in the glossary, the book is mentioned in Horizons as well as the upcoming Redeeming the Plumb. It's Pamela Carlson's favorite H.K. Devonshire novel.

Update!   Two new stories have been added to the Library. They were the two bonus stories included in a link buried in previous news. If you missed them before here they are: Archimedes Eats and Good Woman's Love. On top of that, they've been replaced by two new bonus stories, quietly tucked away but accessible if you're reading the news.

INSIDE THE STORY:  When it comes to "couples", Mahlon Stewert and Pamela Carlson are the readers' favorite in my universe. It's for this reason that from time to time you will see a short story about them. Archimedes Eats is the first finished one, though not the first one written. The first one I wrote, about four years ago, was never finished. Called The Tigershark, it tells about Mal and Pam when they served together on a fast and deadly five-man gunship during the Troid Piracy War. And yes, I do plan to finish it and post it here one day.

Update!   The following stories have been restored to their full length in the Library: Reëntry; Shot Through;

NOT News!   Ouch... been FAR too long since I've updated the site. I guess it's pretty obvious that website maintenance is not my forté. Sorry about that. (And get used to my saying, "Sorry about that." a LOT.)

On the up side, this is a BIG update, as you'll see in the REAL news items following.

News!   TAU is out in ebook and will soon be in trade paperback! The follow up novel to Promise Tide, you don't HAVE to read it, but you'll be kicking yourself. Find out how the adventures of Promise Tide end. You'll be satisfied and surprised, I feel.

INSIDE THE STORY:  By the time TAU occurs, Promise Tide and Christine DuPries have been married for fifteen years. The first main characters in my universe who are openly gay, neither Promise nor Chrissy started out that way, meaning, as I'd originally conceived of their characters. (That happens a lot; I have plans for my characters all the way up to the point that they change them on me.) But they didn't waste any time setting me straight (as it were... *groan*). In the short story Legacy, they showed me where their hearts really were. If you catch me at a convention, ask me for details and I'll let you in on my reactions as I typed out that first story.

News!   The Library is back up! After trying to publish some short stories on their own on Fictionwise, the resounding indifference of the low sales numbers has moved me to bring the short stories back to here, where they belong; free to my readers. The six or so that did get published will have to remain available ONLY through purchase until the contracts expire, but the rest are  going to be popping up in the library, starting today, including some new ones.

News!   Another year, another CONVENTION schedule. I'll be making the normal rounds again;  Philcon, SheVaCon, Ravencon and Balticon. I may return to I-Con, though I'm giving Arisia a pass in 2008. Albacon, sadly, is not being held this year. And I may be attending a few more conventions, because...

News!   My young adult novel, The Angel of St. Thomas, will be launching as a web comic in the very near future! Drawn by well-known, long-established professional anime artist Steve Bennett, the comic will appear in full color comic page format twice a week and launches in the fourth quarter of 2007. You can see how close we're getting at: http://AngelOfStThomas.com right now! Although it does not occur in - nor anywhere close to - the Shards Universe, you'll recognize my style throughout and I'm sure you'll have a great time reading it.

Tidbit:   It's now official: There will be another SHARDS novel. Set about sixteen years after the original four book novel, SHARDS: Coda will also be set on another planet. Currently, the only returning characters are Abigail and Aaron Marks, who are still married and now have four children. I'm hoping to come up with a logical sequence of events to also involve Major Benjamin Deiley. I'd really like to include him in the story, which will take on military aspects as before, but if he won't go in appropriately, he won't go in at all. The same is true with Susie Lendler, though I expect her to be much easier to write in than Deiley.

SHARDS: Coda is presently slated to be written in late 2008 and published in 2009. (To the great joy of my publisher. Shards is my best seller to date and one of Double Dragon's as well.) In fact, even though it won't be in the novel itself, take a little peek...

INSIDE THE STORY:  Major Benjamin Deiley was originally planned to be the penultimate bad guy when he appeared in SHARDS. I had pictured him as being a cruel, cold-hearted monster; the kind that when he dies, everyone cheers. But he refused. Every time he appeared, he would be harsh, yet fair; methodical yet compassionate. By the end of Book Two it was obvious even to me that he was much more than a typical evil villain. He was a strong, multi-layered person, with great intelligence, keen insight, and a gentle nature beneath his necessarily hard demeanor. As a result, Deiley turned into a favorite character of many of my readers and myself.

So who ended up being the "cheer when he's killed" patsy? Easy: Lieutenant Posen. I had intended Posen to play a bit part; less than twenty pages. But he turned into a real snake and I was glad when the time came for him to meet his Maker.

News!   Well, I had a lot of fun at Albacon! They were the first convention to invite me as a guest, back in 2004, and they've always been an enjoyable start to my conning season. It was great meeting a fan, Andrew, and I'd like to pass along a "Hi!" to him. Also, I had a lot of fun panel time with much-more-famous-than-me author Terry McGarry, and if her books are as much fun as she is, then I recommend them!

Date: October 3, 2006

News!   I've been invited by - and accepted invitations to - Philcon and Arisia, being held November and January, in Philadelphia and Boston respectively. Cool! (And cold, since it'll be winter!) I hope to see some of you there! Speaking of conventions:

ALBACON  is only days away! The link is down below. Held in Albany, New York, it's my first con of my season and one I never miss. Close and comfortable, I really enjoy attending. I hope to see you there! And don't be shy; just walk up to me and introduce yourself. I always love meeting my readers and fans.

News!   My wonderful wife Bethlynne is now my business manager. What does that mean for all you? I HOPE it means I won't keep getting bogged down in business stuff to the point that I can't write. Now if only I could kick my World of Warcraft habit, things would be rolling along nicely. I'll have her bio up on the site in short order.

Date: August 22, 2006 - AN APOLOGY

Ouch!  I haven't been paying much attention to the site and need to update it some. For those of you who actually READ this section, you'll find a "bonus" page link: Two short-shorts; one with a story featuring Pam Carlson and Mahlon Stewart from Horizons, and the other a tiny gem from the H.K. Devonshire collection of Ranger stories.

Date: August 22, 2006 - Catching Up On The News

News!  I have a new novel! Outside the Shards Universe, it's called Angel of St. Thomas, and is a young adult fantasy. Carlita is a young woman born and raised on the US Virgin Island of St. Thomas. She's the twelfth generation in her family to be charged by The Carib Angel to guard and protect the people and islands of the lower Antilles. Like her ancestors, she has been bestowed with wondrous abilities... and a weakness.

To read more about Carlita and the storyline, visit: http://AngelOfStThomas.com to see it as a webcomic, with anime artist Steve Bennett giving all the cool renditions.

The novel - with a completely different story - can be found at:

The Angel of St. Thomas

vs. The Galactic Good Guys

News!  I'm in a sick, sick, collection of stories, forced into submitting four shorts (two in the Shards Universe), blackmailed by a vicious, vindictive editor who brought together twelve Double Dragon authors and manipulated us into crumbling to his will!

The title of the anthology is Twisted Tails, and it is indeed twisted. No fewer than thirty-one wonderful short stories, each with an unexpected beginning, middle and/or end. Some SF, some Fantasy, some Other Genre. The whole gamut and a blast to read. Available in ebook and trade paper, this will be an excellent addition to your collection.

You can buy Twisted Tails at any ebook dealer. It is also available in print at the Double Dragon page on Lulu.

...and here's the link to the bonus stories.

Date: August 22, 2006 - Convention Season Again

News!  Just below is my updated Convention Schedule for the 2006-2007 "season". My typical season starts in October with Albacon and ends at Balticon the following May. Because I'm not going to be staffing Otakon in 2007 - after four years of gophering and seven years of staffing - I may be able to extend my SF convention season.

Also, if you ARE coming to any of the conventions below, PLEASE let me know! I really enjoy meeting my fans/readers and don't get to see many. You guys are a quiet bunch! I've only ever had a dozen or so emails sent to me from a few of you. And the only fan I KNOW from the conventions is Jackie. (*lol!* I'll bet you didn't think I'd remember your name, did you, Jackie? And, no, Dan, you don't count: You're my sounding board/muse.)

Date: March 2, 2006

News!  In addition to Career Choice, two more short stories have been published:

SIGN OF IRON:  This classic H.K. Devonshire Martian Western, Sign of Iron, features Roids Cavanaugh when he was still relatively new as a Red Marshal.

INSIDE THE STORY: Sign of Iron was the first Roids Cavanaugh story written in the Shards Universe, but not the first ever written. Roids Cavanaugh appeared in an unnamed short story I wrote back around 1979. It was a respectful satire of western literature, and my sons still laugh out loud whenever I decide to read it. The story exists only as a typed manuscript, and there is only one copy.

TROUBLEMAKER: From the other end of the Shards Universe timeline. Renee Goletsuki is nine years old and very, very dangerous. At least, that's what everyone thinks. Born of a homo Sapiens mother and a homo Magicus father, Renee has all the abilities of her father's magical race, but none of the restrictions.

INSIDE THE STORY: The main character, Renee Goletsuki was created for a short story entitled Garnwalling the Yokel that has yet to be finished. I so loved the character, then a brash, confident, able pilot for the private yacht Esquire, that I decided to give her a past. In doing so, I realized her unique origin as a human hybrid would be a catalyst for a significant change between the Human and Marks races. Troublemaker will be the first of a series of stories following the life of Rene and the impact she has on the Shards Universe.

Both short stories are now available at Double Dragon Publishing, eReader.com and Fictionwise.com. The cover price for each is $1.99, with discounts available.

Coming up in two weeks: A Piñata For Juanita, a bittersweet novella that highlights the life/existence of a young Hispanic girl, and the efforts of scientist from 800 years in the future to help her find her way. INSIDE THE STORY: Can you spot the appearance of John Wyeth?

Coming up in a month: Pinch of Cinnamon, another exciting Roids Cavanaugh story, and introducing a new character, Becky Elam. INSIDE THE STORY: What do Becky Elam and the dilapidated freighter D.L. White have in common?

Date: February 14, 2006 (Happy Valentine's Day!)

News!  The first short story of the Shards Universe Collection, Career Choice, is now available at Double Dragon Publishing, eReader.com and Fictionwise.com. The cover price is $1.99, with discounts available.

Coming up in a week: Sign of Iron, another exciting Roids Cavanaugh story, brought to you by the well known Martian author, HK Devonshire. Sign of Iron was not in the Library, so there's another reason to get it. (That and make me independently wealthy so I can go to writing full time.)

INSIDE THE STORY: Sign of Iron. I'll have a great little tidbit for you next week, when the story goes on sale.

The next one out in three weeks will also be from the Library, but a recent addition (and deletion), so you may not have read it: Troublemaker. You can read the excerpt from the Library here.

Date: February 8, 2006

News!  The first short story of the Shards Universe Collection, Career Choice, is now available at Double Dragon Publishing and will be any minute/hour/day from Fictionwise.

Career Choice was not in the Library, so this is new stuff for all of you. Speaking of new stuff, here's an exclusive feature for you. As each new short story comes out, I'll give you a little insight into it. I'll put up a page in the next week or so that will list the short stories as they come out. I'll move the "Inside The Story" comments to there. Until then,

INSIDE THE STORY: Career Choice takes place on the Earth orbital station Gamma in the year 2293. Those who have read Shards: Book One may remember that in Chapter Six it was revealed that the Gamma was destroyed during the Canadian terrorist incident in 2295, only two years after Career Choice takes place.

The next one out in two weeks will also be new for you: Sign of Iron, another exciting Roids Cavanaugh story brought to you by that excellent Martian native author, HK Devonshire.

News!  Okay, I'm finally, Finally, FINALLY invited to I-CON 25. I love those people, but - Wow! - it can be tough getting things straight sometimes.

 Date: February 6, 2006

Check Out the Ugly Author!  Please do not feed the author; he's really, Really, REALLY trying to regain his form of yesteryear. But for those who have a morbid car-crash-like curiosity, my picture is now included with my bio.

Date: February 3, 2006

Check Out the New Logo!  Thanks to my publisher, Deron Douglas for designing this for me. Look for it on my short stories, which will be coming up for sale very soon!

Date: February 1, 2006

Good News/Bad News:  I really HATE to do this, but I'll be removing the bulk of my Library here on the site. That's the bad news. The good news is why I'm removing it.

I'm presently working with DDP to begin publishing my short stories as inexpensive downloads on Fictionwise.com and possibly other sites. The cost will be low, probably between $1 - $3, depending on length. What makes this good news, since you're getting them free now?

Well:

1. This is only a selection on my site. I have about twenty short stories - good ones, too! - that have not yet seen the light of day. And we're looking at a pretty aggressive schedule for publishing, too. Anywhere from two to four a month.

2. I get paid. Yes, this is REALLY good news for me! But it's also good for you, my readers, as well. The more exposure I get, the more books/stories I'll sell, the more eagerly I'll continue pursuing this as an out and out career. That day is still a looooong way off, but with each sale...

Novel Status:

REDEEMING THE PLUMB: I've been working on this a lot now and am getting really excited. The pages are writing themselves. This novel looks at Pamela Carlson, the Captain of the Horizon, in the novel Horizons. I'll be talking more about this at conventions.

TAU: This is the follow up to my novel Promise Tide, which its sales tell me a lot of you haven't read. Too bad... the books tell a lot about the homo Marinas race, including origin. And if you've read Shards, you'll see a lot of valuable story background.

Anyway, TAU - the acronym for Those Above Us - is a fast paced novel involving Promise Tide, Chrissy DuPries and their friends and fellow warriors as they scramble to complete the Pisces race's final mission: The protection of the Groundfather, Earth's last best chance of breaking free of a tyrannical grip they've been held in for centuries.

THE ANGEL OF ST. THOMAS: This young adult novel occurs outside the Shards Universe, but I think a lot of you would enjoy it. Final editing is complete and it's on the waiting list for publishing.

There might be more news - very exciting news - on The Angel in the near future.

TWISTED TAILS: I've contributed a total of four stories, including two from the Shards Universe.

Taking Over the World... no the UNIVERSE:  I feel like a million bucks! All four of my SHARDS books and HORIZONS have been hanging around the Top 50 on Fictionwise's SF list. All thanks to you readers! You've been buying my books and (hopefully) telling others. I can't tell you how much that means to me, and I want to thank you all.

Who knows? Maybe my royalties will BE a million bucks one day... (Yeah, right. And I want a pony, too.)

Convention Appearance:  As you can tell from my convention schedule, I'll be at Shevacon 14 later this month. I hope a few of you and make to Roanoke, VA and introduce yourselves. I'm still a new writer, so getting "fan mail" and meeting readers is VERY exciting. (Actually, I can't see that feeling ever passing!)

Date: December 19, 2005

Novel-Editing Update:  THE ANGEL OF ST. THOMAS has entered its final editing. Meanwhile, TAU has gone through its first editing. As always, superb work by my very skilled, very patient editor, Karen Babcock.

Date: December 13, 2005

News!  SHARDS: Books One & Two are two of four finalists for the 2006 Eppie Award for Science Fiction. Neat, huh? The Winner will be announced on Saturday, March 18, 2006 in San Antonio at the EPPIE Banquet during EPICon 2006. (Oh, just in case you're wondering: Books Three & Four were not published in the required time period to qualify for the 2006 Eppie. But you can bet I'll be entering them next year for the 2007 Eppie!)

BIG News!  SHARDS: Book One is released! The anchor novel of the Shards Universe is now available! Book One of the four book novel can now be purchased in ebook format. This is the big one, people. This novel is the one all other novels point to or stem from. Being released over the next six months, Shards will explain and show why the Universe is as it is and give intriguing hints on where it's going.

Date: May 31, 2005

News!  Just back from Balticon and *whew!* what  a time! I'm meeting more and more of you and it's a real joy. It's also an inspiration to keep the stories coming. I'll be posting two new short stories in the Library in June. If you have any favorite characters/story lines in the Shards Universe you'd like to see a short story on, write me and let me know!

News!  SHARDS: Book One is in cover design now and it's getting closer and closer to release. Once I have the date, I'll let you know. And look for the cover to be shown here in the near future.

Date: April 1, 2005 -

News!  Finally, a little time to update the site slightly. The site is being visited by more and more people, so I'll need to put up some more information, news, rotate in some fresh stories in the library, and add to the glossary/reference.

For now, however, I hope you'll be interested in meeting me at one of the six conventions I'll be attending this year. (I'm trying to see if I can squeeze in another convention or two this year.

News!  My first published novel, THE SCIENCE OF MAGIC is now available in trade paperback. (It released in ebook format in May, 2004.) Despite my Information Technologies background of twenty plus years, I admit I enjoy reading books more than screens. Here's your chance to pick up a copy of TSOM and carry it around.

News!  My first written novel, SHARDS, is under the editing process now. Book One and Book Two are finished and Book Three is about to be started. I cannot express my gratitude enough to my editor, Karen Babcock. She's turned me into a better writer than I thought I could ever be.

Date: January 3, 2005 - Happy New Year!

Apology!  Wow.... been awhile since I updated the site. I'll be taking care of that through out January. I'm looking to update the home page, add one or two more stories to my Free Library, and add a Subscription Library. It won't cost anything, but you'll need to provide an email address to receive new short stories every month, along with any news.

News!  Another round of awards! This time, my novels Horizons and The Science of Magic have been nominated for the 2005 Eppie Awards. Cool, huh? I know I'm excited. I'd like to attend the awards ceremony, but it's in March and in Long Beach, California. That means vacation time and money. I'm trying to save both for attending Science Fiction Conventions here on the east coast. Speaking of which...

News!  SheVaCon 2005 is the next convention I'll be attending as a Guest. I also have a .table in the Dealers Room, representing my publisher, Double Dragon Publishing. SheVaCon is in Roanoke, VA during the last weekend in February, so if you get a chance, stop by and say HI! I promise you it will be an experience you won't forget.

Date: August 20, 2004

News! Forgive me for not putting this up before, but I've been invited to be a guest at ALBACON 2004. A science fiction convention held in Albany, NY over Columbus Day Weekend. I haven't been told exactly what I'll be doing, but I'll let you know as I find out. What I will be doing is selling autographed copies of HORIZONS. And, yes, for those of you who know my little secret, I will be happy to accommodate you when I sign.

Hope to see you there!

Here's Evo had to say about HORIZONS:

"HORIZONS is spot-on. It is written with a style and grace I would
expect with someone of 20 years of writing under their belt,
effortlessly blending scenes and dialog to weave a complete tapestry.
The characterization is flawless, the imagination untethered... great!"

Opus In Red

I have a phrase that I use to describe that horrible, unearthly, often life-saving, sensation a soldier can feel in the midst of battle. I call it "the place that burns". You'll see me use the phrase in this gritty, unglamorous look of a Terran/Martian wars veteran. (I also describe this sensation in my already posted short story, Reentry.

Grandfather's Quest - Book Two

Library: Well, to celebrate the New Year (2004, that is. I do update this place frequently, you know!), I've added an excerpt from my novel Redeeming The Plumb. It's the Prologue and Chapter One, which starts with a New Year's party on Mars, in the fabulously wealthy section of Enla.

Be warned! Redeeming The Plumb starts out as a very brutal look at man's ugly nature. This is good reading, but it is not light reading.

Date: December 5, 2003

A Plea: Well, as you can see, my Shards Universe site is well over 1100 hits. To everyone who's visited, I hope you've enjoyed reading my science fiction and science/fantasy stories in the Library.

I would like one thing from any of you that have the time: Drop me a quick email to let me know what you think. To date, I've received exactly one email. Gosh, that's depressing! We all know that websites can be... well, boring to maintain. I'm a writer, not a webmaster. (That's Rachel's job, but she appreciates email to! No, really!) Having contact with my readers, fans, and even critics is important for the writing process to continue. What you see in the Library is just a fraction of what I've already written. And I'm writing pretty much every day. You wanna see more? Then for heaven's sake ask me!!

Hoping each and everyone of you have a Blessed Christmas and Joyous New Year!
